Prompt engineering is the skill of writing instructions for an AI so it gives you actually useful answers. AI tools like ChatGPT do exactly what you ask — but they take your words very literally. If you ask something vague, you get a vague answer. If you ask something specific and well-structured, you get something great. Prompt engineering is figuring out the best way to phrase your request, give the right context, and set clear rules so the AI does what you actually want instead of what it thinks you want.

Example: Instead of typing 'write me an email,' you write 'write a short, friendly email to a client explaining a two-day project delay, keep it under 100 words, and end with an apology.' The second version gets a usable result on the first try.
