Canva Locks Core AI Tools Behind $15/Month Paywall
Canva's 2026 Magic Studio update moves the majority of its AI-powered design features — including Magic Edit, Magic Write, and the upgraded Text-to-Image generator — out of the free tier and into Canva Pro, now priced at $15 per month (up from $12.99). Free users retain access to exactly three AI-assisted actions per month before hitting a hard stop. The update also introduces Magic Animate 2.0, which generates short video clips from static designs, and an improved Brand Voice tool that learns tone from uploaded documents. Both are Pro-only from launch. Canva has simultaneously raised the Teams plan from $29.99 to $34.99 per month for the first five users. The free plan's template library has been trimmed by roughly 30 percent, with thousands of previously free templates reclassified as Pro assets. For users who relied on Canva's free tier for occasional social media graphics or simple documents, this update functionally ends that use case. Power users who already pay for Pro get genuinely better AI tools — Magic Animate in particular shows measurable improvement over the previous version's choppy output.
What changed
AI features capped at 3 uses/month on free tier. Pro price up from $12.99 to $15/month. Teams plan up from $29.99 to $34.99/month. Magic Animate 2.0 and Brand Voice 2.0 added as Pro-only. ~30% of free templates moved behind paywall.
Who this affects
Existing Pro subscribers get better AI video and brand tools. Free users get hurt — significantly. Small businesses on tight budgets lose a genuinely useful free option.
Our take
Canva has decided its free tier was too generous, and they are probably right from a revenue perspective — but users who built workflows around it are getting a quiet bait-and-switch.
