ChatGPT
ChatGPT is a conversational AI interface built on OpenAI's GPT family of models, letting users have text-based conversations, generate content, write and debug code, analyze files, and browse the web. It launched to the public in November 2022 and became the fastest consumer app to reach 100 million users. Depending on the plan, it can also generate images, run data analysis, and use third-party plugins or custom GPTs.
Models and pricing
Casual, low-volume use — quick questions, simple writing tasks, basic conversation
You do get access to GPT-4o now, but usage is capped and you get bumped to GPT-4o mini when traffic is high. No persistent memory by default, limited file uploads, no image generation guarantee. Fine for occasional use, frustrating if you rely on it daily.
Individual professionals, writers, developers, researchers who use it daily
Gets you priority access to GPT-4o, DALL-E 3 image generation, Advanced Data Analysis, browsing, vision, and custom GPTs. As of 2024 there are still soft usage caps on GPT-4o that drop you to mini after heavy use in a session — OpenAI has been adjusting these limits. Best value tier for solo power users.
Small to mid-size teams that need collaboration features and don't want their data used for training
Adds a shared workspace, team-level custom GPTs, admin controls, and crucially your conversations are excluded from OpenAI's training data by default. Higher usage caps than Plus. Minimum 2 users. Worth it if your business has data privacy concerns or needs to share GPT setups across staff.
Large organizations needing security, compliance, unlimited usage, and admin controls at scale
No usage caps, SSO, SOC 2 compliance, expanded context windows, and enterprise data privacy guarantees. If your legal or security team has been blocking ChatGPT use at your company, this is the version built to unblock that. Not transparent on price, which is annoying.
Universities and educational institutions deploying AI to students and faculty
Essentially a version of Enterprise tailored to academic needs. Includes GPT-4o access for students, admin controls, and data privacy protections. Relatively new offering as of 2024; details are thin publicly.
Developers building applications, automations, or products on top of OpenAI models
This is not ChatGPT the product; it's direct model access. GPT-4o input is $5 per million tokens, output is $15 per million tokens as of mid-2024 (OpenAI changes these — verify on their pricing page). GPT-4o mini is much cheaper at $0.15/$0.60 per million tokens. Pick this if you're building something, not if you just want to chat.
High-volume, cost-sensitive tasks where top-tier reasoning isn't needed
Faster and far cheaper than full GPT-4o. Solid for summarization, classification, simple Q&A at scale. Not the right choice for nuanced reasoning, complex coding, or anything where mistakes are costly.
Which model should you use?
If you're an individual who uses AI daily for real work, Plus at $20/month is the obvious starting point and hard to beat for the price. If your team has any data privacy requirements or you need shared workflows, go Team — the jump to $30/user is worth it to keep your business data out of training sets.
