Tool profile
Cursor
Cursor is a code editor built on top of VS Code that embeds AI deeply into the editing experience, letting you chat with your codebase, autocomplete entire functions, and apply edits across multiple files at once. It uses frontier models (Claude, GPT-4, and its own) under the hood and feels like pair programming with an AI that can actually read your whole project.
Models and pricing
Trying Cursor before committing any money
Gets you 2000 completions and 50 slow premium requests per month. The slow requests use GPT-4 or Claude but are rate-limited and deprioritized. Good enough to evaluate the tool seriously, not enough for daily professional use.
Individual developers who want Cursor as their main editor
Unlimited completions, 500 fast premium model requests per month (GPT-4, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, etc.), then unlimited slow requests after that. This is the sweet spot for most developers. The 500 fast requests go faster than you expect if you use it heavily.
Teams that need centralized billing, admin controls, and privacy guarantees
Everything in Pro plus organization-wide policy controls, SSO, and a guarantee that code is not used to train models. If you are at a company with any compliance or IP sensitivity, this is the one to get. Not a huge feature jump over Pro otherwise.
Large organizations with custom security, deployment, or contract needs
Adds things like self-hosted options, custom contracts, and dedicated support. Cursor does not publish prices here. Worth pursuing only if Business does not satisfy your security or procurement requirements.
Which model should you use?
Most developers should start on the free Hobby tier to verify the workflow clicks for them, then move to Pro at $20/month once they are using it daily — Business is only worth the extra $20/user if your company has real compliance or IP concerns.
