Tool profile
Surfer SEO
Surfer SEO is a content optimization platform that analyzes top-ranking pages for a given keyword and tells you what to include in your own content to compete. It scores your content in real time against competitors, suggests word counts, headings, NLP terms, and internal linking opportunities. It also includes an AI writing assistant for drafting SEO-optimized content from scratch.
Models and pricing
Solo bloggers or very small teams doing light SEO content work
Gives you access to the Content Editor for up to 30 articles per month and 5 Auto-Optimize runs. No AI content writing credits included at this tier. If you are publishing fewer than 8 optimized posts a month and do not need AI drafting, this is the entry point — but it feels tight for the price.
Growing content teams and SEO agencies managing multiple clients or sites
Jumps to 100 articles per month, 20 Auto-Optimize runs, and adds AI-generated article drafts (up to 10 per month via Surfer AI). This is where most serious users land. The per-article AI cost works out reasonable if you are actually using the drafts as a starting scaffold rather than finished copy.
Teams that want to produce high volumes of AI-assisted SEO content with minimal manual research
Includes everything in Scale plus significantly more Surfer AI article credits (around 50/month). Makes sense only if your workflow actually involves publishing AI-drafted content at scale. Be honest with yourself: more AI articles is not better if your editing pipeline cannot keep up.
Large agencies, media companies, or in-house SEO teams with custom volume needs
Adds white-labeling, custom article limits, a dedicated account manager, and API access. Pricing is negotiated. Only worth pursuing if you have exhausted Scale AI and need brand customization or very high content volumes. Verify current terms directly with Surfer — this tier changes frequently.
One-off AI article drafts without a full subscription commitment
You can buy Surfer AI article credits à la carte on top of any plan or in some cases without a full plan. At ~$29 per article it is expensive for pure AI drafting — tools like Jasper or even ChatGPT Plus will be cheaper. The value is the automatic SEO optimization baked into the draft, not the prose quality.
Which model should you use?
For most independent bloggers and small teams, the Scale plan billed annually is the honest sweet spot — Essential feels artificially limited and Scale AI is overkill unless you have an editor reviewing AI output daily. If you are just auditing existing content and do not need AI drafts, Essential covers the basics but expect to bump up against the article limit quickly.
